Did you know that every moment of your life matters?
It may not seem that way when you’re bored, when you’re brushing your teeth, or when you accidentally nod off during class! But in reality, every moment in your life is an opportunity to do what you’re made for.
One time, Jesus was asked a really important question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment?” (Matthew 22:36). In other words, he was asked what is most important in life, what God values.
Jesus’ answer was this: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:37-39).
This is what God wants from us. This is what can bring meaning to every moment in our lives: Love God and love others.
In every moment, you have the opportunity to love God and love others. You can be aware of and enjoy God’s presence. You can live with gratitude. You can lovingly do what God wants for you. You can care for others the same way you care for yourself. This is what you were made for, and living this way brings meaning to every moment.
It’s not just in loving God and others that brings meaning to your life; God himself also brings meaning to every moment, both the good and the bad.
First, the good: The Bible teaches that, “every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father” (James 1:17a). When you experience good things in your life, it is a gift from the God who loves you! No good moment is an accident or coincidence; it comes from God himself.
Second, the bad: The Bible also says, “and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him” (Romans 8:28a). If you are a follower of Jesus, living out your purpose by loving God, God promises to bring good out of the bad moments in your life.
This doesn’t mean that God will make your bad moments go away. Far from it. However, God does promise that even the trials and tragedies of life won’t stop his goodness from overflowing to you. Through suffering, he might make you stronger, wiser, provide you new opportunities, or just draw you closer to him and his love. This means that every moment, even the worst ones, can have meaning.
